Why is my heat pump covered in ice?
Some frost on the outdoor coil in cold weather is normal, and the unit runs a defrost cycle to clear it. A heat pump that stays iced over has a defrost problem: a failed sensor, a stuck reversing valve, or a control board that is not calling for defrost. It can also point to a low refrigerant charge. We test the defrost cycle rather than guessing, and show you what we found.
Why does my backup heat run all the time?
Usually because the heat pump is not producing its rated heat. Auxiliary or emergency heat is meant to assist on the coldest days, not carry the house, so running constantly in mild weather points to a low charge, a dirty coil, an airflow restriction, or a changeover that is not happening. It is also the fastest route to a high electric bill, which is often how people notice.
Why does my heat pump run for so long?
Long, steady run times are normal for a heat pump. It moves heat at a lower output than a furnace burns it, so it holds temperature by running longer rather than in short bursts. What is not normal is the backup heat running alongside it in mild weather, or the system failing to hold the temperature you set — both of those are worth a look.
How often should a heat pump be serviced?
Twice a year is the usual recommendation, because a heat pump runs in both seasons and puts in roughly double the hours a furnace does. If that is not practical, one thorough visit a year is far better than none. The tune-up covers the coils, the refrigerant charge, the airflow, the defrost cycle, and the changeover between heating and cooling.
How much does a heat pump repair cost?
A service call is $150 per hour with a one-hour minimum, and any parts are billed separately. We diagnose the problem and tell you what the repair will cost before we start, so the number you approve is the number you pay. If the heat pump cannot be repaired, or replacement makes more sense, the quote for a new system is free.
When does repairing an old heat pump stop making sense?
When the repair cost approaches a meaningful share of a replacement, the system is near the end of its service life, or the same failure is likely to repeat. We price the repair, tell you where the system sits in its life, and say plainly when replacing is the better value and when it is not.
