What is a mini split, and how is it different from central air?
A mini split mounts on the wall and connects to an outdoor unit by a refrigerant line, so it heats and cools without ductwork. Central air pushes conditioned air through ducts from one indoor unit; ductless conditions each room directly from its own head. That is what makes it practical for additions, converted spaces, and older homes the central system never reached.
How well does a mini split heat in an Oregon winter?
Well below freezing. The same system heats and cools, and modern cold-climate ductless models are rated to heat efficiently at temperatures colder than this region actually sees. The key is sizing to hold temperature on the coldest nights rather than falling behind. We size for the cold stretches, not the average day.
Why choose a mini split over central heating and cooling in a home without ducts?
Because it adds heating and cooling without the cost and disruption of building ductwork. A ducted system only makes sense if you are adding ducts anyway. Ductless also conditions room by room, so each space gets its own control rather than one setting for the whole house. Where ducts already exist and are in good shape, a ducted heat pump is worth comparing.
How much does a mini split installation cost?
Most ductless installations we completed in the last year ranged from $6,500 to $16,000. The range is wide because it depends heavily on what the house needs: the number of heads, the capacity each room requires, and the line routing between the heads and the outdoor unit.
How many heads does a mini split system need?
Usually one per closed-off room, plus one for an open living area. Bedrooms and rooms behind doors each need their own head for even comfort, while an open space can often be served by a single well-placed one. Heads share an outdoor unit, and an outdoor unit has a minimum share of its capacity that needs to be in use, so the system is designed as a whole rather than added a room at a time.
How long does a mini split installation take?
A single-zone install is often done in a day, and a multi-zone system takes longer depending on the number of heads and the line routing. We confirm your specific timeline in the written quote before scheduling. Because the work is mostly outside and at the wall, the disruption inside the home stays limited compared with a ducted project.
Who pulls the permit for a mini split installation?
A mini split installation requires a mechanical permit, and we pull it through your local jurisdiction and schedule the inspection as part of the job. The inspection verifies the install meets code, which protects you and keeps the equipment warranty valid. You do not have to handle any of the paperwork yourself.
